A new outdoor gym, including equipment that links to people’s phones, could be coming to the Humber Bridge Country Park, as part of efforts to improve mental health and wellbeing.

Plans have been lodged with East Riding Council for equipment including a balance board, overhead ladder and parallel bars. A cross trainer, similar to those found in indoor gyms, would connect to the user’s phone to share information about speed, distance and calories burned.

The proposals have been put forward by the Rotary Club of Hull. If approved, the gym would be built close to the Country Park car park, off Ferriby Road, Hessle.

According to the plans, the gym is designed to support the work of the mental health wellbeing hub, which is based at the Country Park, and equipment would also be available for visitors to use. It would be constructed on the site of a former café, which closed in 2017 and was demolished.

Equipment proposed for the gym includes a leg-lift and pull-up station and monkey bars. Parallel bars would allow visitors to do dips, while a “combi” frame would be used for sit ups, leg lifts and pull ups. Other stations would include an arm bike and steps for leg training, while magnetic would provide a similar experience to medicine and kettle balls.

The Humber Bridge Board and East Riding Council are working alongside the Rotary Club, according to the plans. The application states: “The site is a piece of unused land within the Humber Bridge Country Park. The aim of the project is to provide an outdoor gym and fitness area winch will compliment the activities of provided at the Wellbeing Hub as well as providing a facility for the whole of the community and visitors to the Country Park.

“It is being supported by the suicide prevention team lead, based at the Wellbeing Hub. Development will consist of a specialised surface suitable for a fitness area and fixed pieces of gym equipment will be sited on this.”
